Scratch Removal

Knives can develop scratches that vary considerably in depth, from light surface marks to deeper scratches that require more extensive reconditioning.

As part of our standard sharpening service, we buff and polish the blade around the cutting edge, removing light scratches and surface marks wherever possible using our professional polishing wheels.

We always endeavour to remove scratches to the best of our ability, while carefully considering the blade's taper, thickness and overall construction. Removing too much steel can compromise the structural integrity and performance of a knife, so we always take a considered approach to ensure that scratch removal never comes at the expense of the blade itself.

Preserving Manufacturer Logos & Engravings

Where scratches extend towards a manufacturer's logo or engraving, our standard approach is to gradually blend and fade the polishing from the cutting edge upwards towards the branding. This allows us to remove or minimise scratches across the lower portion of the blade while preserving to the best possible outcome the original logo wherever practically possible.

Deeper scratches can be more difficult to remove completely, particularly when they are close to or directly beneath a manufacturer's logo. Removing these entirely may require the surrounding surface steel to be reduced to a level that would also eliminate the original branding.

We are happy to undertake more extensive scratch removal, including the removal of branding, where appropriate and upon request.

Special Requests at Checkout

If your knives have scratches close to the manufacturer's logo and you have particular concerns about preserving the branding, please leave us a comment at checkout.

Otherwise, there is no need to provide special instructions. Our standard procedure is always to achieve the best possible finish while preserving the knife's original characteristics, branding and structural integrity wherever possible.

Please bear in mind that we cannot accurately assess the depth of scratches or the extent of reconditioning required until we have received and physically inspected your knives in our workshop.

The image below shows a set of fully reconditioned Global knives. The deep scratches have been carefully removed, along with the original branding, leaving the blades with a beautifully restored, brushed satin finish.
