Bread Knife Sharpening
Slide to Reveal Our Bread Knife Magic
How We Restore Your Knife
A blunt bread knife doesn't necessarily need new serrations. In many cases, its original cutting edge can be restored without removing unnecessary steel.
At Blade & Butler, we assess every bread knife individually, taking into account its brand, blade quality, thickness, serration geometry and overall condition. We then select the most appropriate method to restore its cutting performance.
Not Every Bread Knife Needs Re-Serrating
There are three principal approaches we take, depending on the condition of the knife.
1. Complete bread knife re-serration
Where the original serrations are excessively worn, damaged or beyond effective restoration, we can completely re-serrate the blade by hand, creating a fresh, functional cutting profile.
2. Restoring worn serrations
If the serrations have simply lost their sharpness, we can often restore the cutting edge by carefully thinning the reverse side of the serrations. This brings renewed sharpness to each individual tooth without having to cut an entirely new serrated profile.
The process may reduce the depth of the serrations very slightly, typically by approximately 0.25 mm, but preserves considerably more of the original blade than a complete re-serration.
3. Thinning excessively thick serrations
Budget bread knives frequently have thick blades and heavy tapers, resulting in serrations that behave more like the teeth of a saw than the fine cutting edge of a bread knife.
In these cases, we carefully thin the serrations to improve their cutting geometry. This is often sufficient to transform the knife's performance without replacing the existing serrated profile.
Full bread knife re-serration is included in our sharpening service at no additional charge.
Why We Prefer to Preserve the Original Serrations
Sharpening is a reductive process: once steel has been removed, it cannot be replaced.
Completely re-serrating a bread knife removes more material than simply restoring its existing edge. Where a less invasive approach will produce an equally effective result, we believe it is better for the knife.
Our objective is always to restore excellent cutting performance while removing the minimum amount of steel necessary.
Can I Request a Complete Re-Serration?
Absolutely.
If you want us to not evaluate your bread knife and want a full reserration, just leave a commnet at checkout along the lines of
"Please re serrate the bread knife."
We will then carry out a complete re-serration at no additional charge, even if the original serrations could otherwise have been restored.
Please be aware that re-serration is performed by hand, so the finished profile may differ slightly from the original manufacturer's serrations. Please see image carousel below for examples.
Our Standard Bread Knife Sharpening Procedure
Unless you specifically request a complete re-serration at checkout, you authorise Blade & Butler to assess your bread knife and select the most appropriate sharpening method.
We may restore the existing serrations, thin an excessively thick cutting edge or completely re-serrate the blade where necessary.
Every decision is guided by the knife's individual geometry, quality and condition, with the aim of achieving the best possible cutting performance while preserving as much of the original steel as possible.
This individual approach forms part of our 360° Care Plan, ensuring that every bread knife receives the attention it needs rather than an unnecessary one-size-fits-all sharpening treatment.
Three different approaches. One objective: an exceptionally effective bread knife, restored with the minimum necessary steel removal.
