Bushcraft & hunting knives
At Blade & Butler, any knife not commonly used in a kitchen is termed as an ‘Outdoor’ knife. These include all folding knives, utility trade knives, bushcraft and hunting knives.
As Outdoor knives generally have wider spines and thicker tapers than kitchen knives these style of knives are often ( but not always ) given hollow grinds as standard in order to thin down the blade behind the cutting edge. Around 80% of Outdoor knives received in to our workshops need this thinning treatment.
A newly created thinned or wider bevel may reduce slightly as it nears the heel of the blade on knives with bolsters or handles with heel guards in order to not damage the handle or bolster in the sharpening process. This does not affect the functionality or sharpness of the knife in anyway.
The wider bevel may reduce slightly as it nears the pointed tip of a knife if we feel the taper of the blade is too thin at this point. This is in order to reduce the chance of the blade edge chipping due to the new thinner taper.
Every blade is unique and so we adjust accordingly.
If you'd like to opt out of any of the above procedures please leave a comment at Checkout.
We administer hollow grinds because experience tells us that this improves longevity of sharpness and provides for a superior, longer lasting edge.
In some cases where we feel that the existing blade taper is adequately thin we will administer a standard 12-18 degree bevel onto the existing tapered bevel. Please note that we do not administer full taper re grinds. Customers give Blade & Butler discretion on how we administer our new bevel to existing tapers.
To achieve the desired 12-18 degree bevelled angle the size of the bevel can vary in width depending on the existing thickness of the blade.
Some wider bevels can encroach upon blade logos if blade logos are near the cutting edge.
This is unavoidable and a necessary bi product of achieving correct angles and bevels.
If you'd like your blade branding untouched please leave a comment at checkout or better still, email an image prior to sending in your knives so that we can evaluate and revert to you.
We are happy to sharpen to original tapers - but do bear in mind this can in some instances affect logos, coatings and change the aesthetic appearance of the original blade. Again, please leave a comment at Checkout for us to do so.
Wider bevels are administered by hand and so there is a very slight wave in the appearance of the beveled edge. Please see images to illustrate.
We are happy to take direction if you would like other bevels created or followed. To request this simply leave a comment at checkout.
BOLTS,FIXINGS & THUMB PROTRUSIONS
If your knives have bolts, protrusions or accessories attached to the blade or spine we recommend customers remove them prior to shipping or contact us to talk through the options available to you.
These protrusions can affect the angle of the sharpened bevel and so if we do not receive direction, we will sharpen at our own discretion.
These objects on the spine of the blade can sometimes be scuffed in the sharpening process as the angle of the blade to sharpening stones and polishing wheels is narrow and acute in order to achieve bevel angles.
In some instances depending on the size of these objects, bevels may alter in appearance as they near the protrusions due to changes in angles needed to avoid touching these bolts. This affects aesthetics only. The cutting performance is not compromised.
Customers agree to give us discretion on how we approach the servicing of their knives in these instances if no prior direction is given.
Customers also agree that in some instances where these protrusions are scuffed - Blade & Butler cannot be held responsible for damages as this is sometimes unavoidable in order to achieve desired bevel angles when sharpening by hand.
If in doubt we recommend contacting us prior to shipping so we can discuss or if possible, remove the protrusions prior to shipping. Failing that - simply not sending these kinds of knives in for re- sharpening is advised if aesthetics are more important than the functionality of a sharp knife.
